What's the problem you are trying to solve?: 
The goal of AutismUGA is to improve the lives of children, individuals and families affected by autism in Athens and Northeast Georgia.  1 in 150 children is diagnosed with autism today in the U.S. and that statistic is even higher, at 1 in 131, in the state of Georiga.  One local elementary school alone serves over 50 students on the autism spectrum in Athens.  We have made it the goal of AutismUGA to reach out the the families affected and provide wonderful family events. We also seek to increase awareness of autism and its effects, and to raise money to donate to the research and treatment of the disorder.

AutismUGA is a brand new organization at the University of Georgia.  The club is organizing students in efforts to impact the autism community in Athens and Northeast Georgia by promoting awareness, volunteering in the community and raising money for autism research and treatment.  1 in 131 children in Georgia is diagnosed with autism, and we are striving to make a difference any way that we can.  
What's your plan of action?: 
In the fall of 2008, AutismUGA began with six UGA students dedicated to making a difference.  We started by clearly defining our mission and vision, and by setting goals for the organization.  We worked hard prior to the beginning of the semester to inform all faculty members and local business owners of our new endeavor, and once school started began an intense campaign to promote our first ever informational meeting.  Since August, we have been able to mobilze the group to accomplish many things.  Among our activities thus far, we have held "I support AutismUGA" sticker and hand fan awareness campaigns at football games, held a fundraiser at a local gym, hosted an Autism Awareness Night at a basketball game, volunteered at a monthly Saturday morning program, participated in UGA's homecoming events and much more.  We have made an impact on the UGA students who are eager to become members and help further achieve.  Most importantly, we have been able to impact the lives of the many families struggling with the challenges of autism.  Often frustrated with the lack of services and support provided, families have thus far shown great appreciation for our efforts. We are excited for AutismUGA to grow, so that we can better work to assist the families in our area.
How Can Others Help?: 
There are many ways that individuals, families, groups or businesses can join AutismUGA.  Thus far, approximately 80 students have become official members of the club.  Service providers can be added to our database of resources for families to read, and can take part in our soon-to-be annual Community Resource Fair.  Business owners that would like to sponsor or donate are greatly appreciated.  Families providing input are also huge assets to AutismUGA.  Feedback from those that we are striving to serve is vital to the success and effectiveness of AutismUGA.
