The Problem
In Nepal, when a woman goes to prison and there are no other relatives willing or able to take care of her children, the children often go with her to jail. For the past 7 years, the Early Childhood Development Center in Kathmandu, Nepal has been rescuing these children from prison, often in cases where the children are at risk of facing or have already faced trafficking, child labor, or incestual rape. In prison, the children are not given their own food ration, health care, warm blankets or clothing, and they are not allowed to attend the adult educational classes. They suffer trauma, health complications, and fall far behind in their education. This is a system that perpetuates crime by teaching children violence and ignoring the importance of creativity and education from such a young age. Deprived of their most basic needs, the children are molded into a life of poverty and imprisonment before they even get a chance to become who they are.
Plan of Action
I am starting Babies Behind Bars, a student organization at 7 universities to raise money and awareness for these children and the larger issue of imprisoned children in Nepal. We will gain attention of larger NGOs to support the children and raise money to build this residential home through grants and individual donations.
Next summer I will return to Kathmandu to research the problem in depth and learn how to go about changing the system so children enter residential homes when their mothers go to prison instead of being locked behind bars. Since there are so few children facing this problem, it would only take 2-3 residential homes for this to become a reality, but we can start by building one.
I want to garner support for the various emotional and physical needs of these children so they will not fall into their own life of crime but will succeed in school and have dreams of their own.
