Backpack Program

the problem:

Elementary school students who qualify receive free breakfast and lunch at school during the week, but may not have access to food at home.

vital stats:

people impacted:

135

people involved:

75

why it's important:

The Campus Kitchen at Washington and Lee (CKWL) is always looking for ways to relocate resources to help those in need. We've done a good job of helping special programs, but would like to focus more on helping the general population just struggling to get enough to eat.

the plan of action:

Walmart currently donates food to CKWL through a partnership with Feeding America. CKWL plans to make use of the food by partnering with the Elementary School and providing food for the weekend in backpacks for students to take home with them.

how you can get involved:

CKWL can use help in getting backpacks, organizing food in our pantry, and delivering the backpacks to the school.

project updates:

02/22/2010

Wal-Mart donates a lot of food to our Campus Kitchen. Being in the business of accepting donations, we never quite know what we'll be getting. Thanks to the grant we received from Do Something, on February 3rd the Campus Kitchen at Washington and Lee was able to purchase some backpack staples from our local food bank- Peanut Butter, Mac and Cheese, Cheese and Crackers, and Green Beans. Thanks Do Something!
