The Problem

During the 2008-2009 school year, Seneca Valley School District lost two students to suicide. This brought to light the devastating affects bullying has on a school and the catastrophic results it can lead to. In order to overcome these challenges, Seneca Valley School District implemented numerous programs; however, students are not properly utilizing these tools. The main struggle our school faces is its size: Seneca Valley has six-hundred or more students in each graduating class. This breaks down to four elementary schools, one middle school, one intermediate high school, and one senior high school. These divisions between grades and socio-economic backgrounds create social barriers before students arrive in busses on their first day.

Plan of Action

During the primary steps of our project: brainstorming, planning, and organizing; our school has networked and communicated better than ever before. Students, faculty, and administrators alike have easily come to agreement on the challenging aspects of our Venture: mission statement, committee representation, student responsibility, etc. Overcoming these obstacles has brought a lot of attention to our goal and purpose. Organizations within Seneca Valley are also beginning to recognize the potential Battle of the Classes can have on our school. As such, Battle of the Classes has been approved by both the Seneca Valley Intermediate and Senior High School administrators. Moving forward into the actual activities and events that will take place, the Student Leadership Council is delegating the responsibilities to numerous clubs and organizations in the school district.
