Be The Change
the problem:
In the Summer of 2008 two of my friends and I went downtown in Oklahoma City and saw the number of homeless and needy people that were not being let into the community shelters for reasons that we saw as ridiculous. We went and fed and gave water to them and just talked with them about their lives. This helped us get involved in the downtown area and help these people get the food they couldnt easily get because of the shelters not letting them in. As I became more involved in my high school, it became harder to keep my grades up, and my friends both moved away. For this reason we could not continue the project, but helped start a home for young single mothers and their children in downtown Oklahoma City called "The Refuge".

3why it's important:
It is a reoccuring situation in not only our communtiy, but communities like ours all over the World. It is said that world wide hunger could be stopped if we just donated $10 Billion, considering my friends and I are teenagers with part time jobs, we gave what we could with little or no help from our peers or adults around us.
the plan of action:
We went downtown the first time and bought 20 cheeseburgers. The next week we incorporated a 24 pack of waterbottles. We continued this cycle and would add in chips every now and then as we could afford. At the end of the Summer, we held a cook out where over 200 homeless and needy people were fed with hot dogs, chips, Kool-Aid, Water and cookies. We performed all of these activities with money out of our own pockets.
