The Problem

Chemung County is one of the poorest counties in New York State. The mission of the Chemung County Youth Bureau is to provide advocacy and support toward youth service goals and positive recreational development for the children and families of Chemung County. One of the ways they do this is through an all day summer program, Summer Cohesion. Most participants in this program live below the poverty line and lack education about disaster preparedness and basic emergency training. As most of Chemung County sits within the flood plain and is surround by bodies of water and forrests, disaster safety education is needed.

Plan of Action

To get this project running, I worked with my local Red Cross Chapter Youth Services Department. The Youth Director helped me to get permission from the Youth Bureau and to set up a schedule so myself and ten of my friends could visit each of the twelve Summer Cohesion sites.
