The Problem
Every year over 2.5 million people visit Sandy Hook Beach. This project will help not only those who frequently visit the beach but also the millions of animals in the oceans. By going to the beach and cleaning up waste we hope to make an immediate difference and inspire everyone else to do the same. By picking up trash, we are making the beach a cleaner and healthier place for its visitors. Furthermore, did you know that an estimated 14 billion pounds of plastic waste is dumped in the ocean every year? Plastic bags and other plastic wastes choke almost 1 million marine animals. By preventing many harmful agents – such as plastics and other non- biodegradable wastes- from entering the oceans we are saving the lives of countless animals.
Plan of Action
The Middlesex County DoSomething Swim Club plans to tackle this problem in two ways: By physical labor and spreading awareness. We plan on starting with Sandy Hook beach and then broadening our reach to multiple beaches once our club gains an ample number of members. Physically, we will pick up non-biodegradables on the beach. This will prevent more waste from going into the oceans. We plan on going to the beaches frequently to clean up especially doing major holiday since more people visit beaches and more trash is accumulated. Also to supplement this, some club members will distribute pamphlets raising awareness to the amount of non-biodegradables that are dumped into the ocean and its ruinous effects on the oceans. By educating people about the adverse and fatal effects this has on all marine life, hopefully we can urge people to recycle and become more eco-friendly.
