The Problem

The project targets schools and local communities around the schools. The first phase of the project targets Nursery and Primary schools. It targets Nursery and primary schools because they are the foundation of every successful child. When climbing a ladder, we must begin from the bottom (The bottom-top approach). Children are the most vulnerable to the impacts of Climate Change and unsustainable environments; that is why BECLEGS has children as primary focus in the first phase of the project. Gratitude Bilingual Nursery and Primary School (GBNPS) and its environs of Mile 3, Nkwen – Bamenda is already a beneficiary of BECLEGS which has as its ultimate goal, “the transformation of all schools into Beautiful Clean Green Schools; hence establish a culture of life where communities care for nature, clean up, fix up and conserve their environment; thus paint the World green.” The problems being solved include; - Ignorance of global environmental issues and lack of environmental knowledge (education) is a major problem faced by pupils and students of a handful of schools. - Little or no concern about environmental health, hygiene, and sanitation of pupils and students in schools especially during outdoor activities like games, break (lunch), etc is also a problem faced in many schools. - Climate change is a threat to everything including education hence a global problem. - Most schools are present in unsustainable, risky and unhealthy environments hence retard learning and expose students to an unsafe environment making them very vulnerable to dangerous activities or danger. This is also a problem that the project seeks to address. - Lack of enviro-health clubs in schools and local communities is another problem BECLEGS strives to solve.

Plan of Action

As a project plan, BECLEGS effectively achieves its goal via; Sensitization: This is done by a Green team that visits schools. The team identifies the most vulnerable schools which are then marked as project target at the time. The schools are further sensitized with the aid of posters and radio programs. The ear-marked school is then visited by the Green team of organization for further arrangements to made so that their school becomes a beneficiary of BECLEGS. Education: Sensitization is followed by education. Education is done on a weekly basis (On every green day (Friday) of the week). Education also involves quizzes, essay competitions, singing and painting (drawing) competitions and drama competitions. While imparting knowledge on the pupils, cleaning is being done. Cleaning includes anti-litter campaigns, clearing bushes, mobbing, sweeping, and general cleaning of the school campus and its environs. Greening and beautifying pursues cleaning. Greening is done by planting of beautiful flora that beautify and green the school campus and its environs. Establishment of a Green Club: Upon greening, cleaning and beautifying, a task team is then set up to ensure the sustainability of the project. This team is the Green Club which is established to nurture the flora and ensure the continuity and sustainability of the project. The Green club is governed by a President, secretary, Environmental officer and Green life officer. Finally, there is the signing of a Memorandum of understanding between the school and the mother organization. This memorandum is simply a document that contains the principles that partner the organization the school.
