Being a Part of NOH8

the problem:

On November 4th of 2008, Proposition 8 was passed which amended the state Constitution to ban same-sex marriage. NOH8 is a silent protest created by famous photographer Adam Bouska and his partener Jeff Parshley in response to the passing of Proposition 8. Those who support Marriage Equality are in these NOH8 photos with duct tape over their mouths to symbolize their voice not being heard and being silenced, and NOH8 (meaning No Hate) is painted on their cheek in protest. I wanted to be a part of this in support of a family member and some of my closest friends.

why it's important:

This is very important to me because my Uncle who has done so much for myself and my family is gay and I believe he deserves every right a straight or straight couple has. My best friend Tony, who is in some of the pictures above, a former co-worker who has been like a father to me, and many other co-workers of mine who treat me like family are as well gay. They are no different than a straight person, yet many people treat them as if they are inhuman or as if they are far below the world's standards. I can't just stand around and watch people continue to bash the gay community left and right when I strongly believe and know that we are all no different from one another.

the plan of action:

My best friend, Tony, told me a of a girl who was taking NOH8 photos in the area I live and he wanted me to be a part of it with him. I couldn't refuse. It was finally a way for me to show my support for him, my Uncle, co-workers, and those I consider family. I believe I have made a strong impact on many. I posted the pictures I took on my myspace and facebook and in response I got a lot of people asking questions about what the photos were for and I was proud to tell them what they were for. Some people just turned their noses up, but there were others who wanted to become a part of the cause too which made me very happy.

how you can get involved:

Others can help by starting a NOH8 photoshoot in your area or even being in NOH8 and submitting these photos to the NOH8 campaign website as well as posting your photos on your personal webpage to raise some more awareness.
