The Problem
Every BDFC event is dedicated to a different cause. We don't limit ourselves to just one!
Since 2009, our multi-genre collection of artists has honed its talents in support of breast cancer research, autism awareness, displaced veteran aid, Haiti earthquake relief, international human rights, African history awareness, underprivileged youth/community opportunities, anti-violence/anti-discrimination/anti-abuse work for women and girls, women's history awareness and more!***
Another problem I try to solve is the artist's struggle for visibility. BDFC gives both emerging and established artists an opportunity to showcase and advertise their work. There are many talented artists who just need opportunities for exposure. BDFC gives them those opportunities.***
BDFC was inspired by the knowledge that many people want to do something about the problems they encounter in the world around them. However, a reluctance to act often stems from lack of time, money, or resources. We solve this problem by making it EASY for the "average" person to give back whether that means attending a low-cost BDFC concert/showcase in an upscale venue or stumbling upon one of our events in the subway. It doesn't matter if someone gives a penny or an $100 bill--their contribution is important and they get a great show on top of that!
Plan of Action
I gather artists of multiple genres under one "roof": in subway stations, outside in nature, in the streets and, more recently, in popular performance venues in order to provide free (donation optional) and low-cost performances for the community.
Proceeds from shows are always donated to an active, well-established charity, not-for-profit, or grassroots organization. Giving back couldn't get any easier or more entertaining for the audience members, artists get a chance to do something good for the world AND promote their art, and non-profits/charities/grassroots organizations get lots of money.***
Win Win Win :)***
My next big BDFC event is set for October 1st, 2010 and will feature more mainstream musicians and cultural dance acts from around the world in support of two great non-profits that offer free educational and arts programs for underprivileged youth. This benefit concert will be free for K-12 kids and open to all. Depending on our level of grant support this event may take place at the Apollo theater or the Hip Hop Cultural Center. The more money we receive, the closer we get to the Apollo...
