The Problem
We are helping our fellow classmates become more aware of the environmen. We want to show them that the things they throw away every day can be recycled. We want to make the students aware of what they purchase and encourage them to by products made from recycled materials. Recyclable items our filling up our landfills and take years to break down while exposing the environment to harmful chemicals. We want to encourage the city of Bardstown to be an active helper of the environment and to show people that it is easy to recycle.
Plan of Action
This year I initiated the Green Club at Bethlehem High School in Bardstown, Kentucky. Our first project was to start a recycling program. We have recycling bins set up around the school for collecting paper, newspaper, cans, and #1 and #2 plastics. Once a week, the city landfill comes and collects our recycled items. We are hoping to expand this project and have more bins throughout the school and also to collect other recyclable items such as batteries, old cell phones and ink cartridges. We are hoping to make it a tradition to plant a garden on school property and hopefully plant a tree every year somewhere in the Bardstown community. At the end of this school year we collected binders, paper, pens and folders that would normally just be thrown away. We are planning on donating these to students in need or selling them back to our students for the next school year.
