The Problem

Did you know that more than half of Americans are either overweight or obese? Lots of people think that being overweight is an appearance issue. But being overweight is actually a medical concern because it can seriously affect a person’s health. For my senior project I am putting together a weight loss challenge for me and my family. Keeping a healthy lifestyle is very important to me. I want to have a healthy body and be active so when I get older and have children I can run and play outdoors without having to deal with health problems. The weight loss challenge consists of running on the treadmill, doing push-ups and sit-ups, and a little ab-workouts. We will also take one week out of every month to run one-mile on the track. Each person is given the task to write down his/her meal plan down, of the times they ate and how much they ate. This will help determine if it’s the food their eating or the portions that is causing the weight gain. The people involved will consist of my dad, my mother, my aunt, and me. I started this project in August and it will last until Christmas day. So far the workouts have taken place at my house but we will be going to the YMCA to do water aerobics as well. I chose to do this project because I feel I could lose a few pounds myself and I think this will be a good challenge for me. What will I do to make the project interesting? Well each time we have a work out there’s a money box where each person is expected to add at least a dollar in the box. At the end of the project whoever has lost the most amount of weight will receive the money that’s in the box. I got this idea from the TV show “The Biggest Loser” expect in this case there’s no $100,000 prize. While training, my mentor, Margaret Pender occasionally comes and helps with sessions and gives us pointers as to what we’re doing. I chose her because she is a spokesperson at my church who talks to young teens about their weight and living a healthy lifestyle. Although she is constantly yelling, we still appreciate the motivation she gives us to want to work hard. Aggravated by the attempts of eating sweets, I struggled to eat right. I would occasionally eat light foods but would eat more portions than necessary. To help overcome my consistent hunger, I would try hard to not think about food. I would keep myself busy, and do just anything I could do to keep my mind off of food. This project has helped me learn that I am capable of all things. It shows me that despite the storm I can still make the best out of any situation. Many people choose to lose weight for many various reasons; I for one believe that losing weight now will help better me in the future. If it wasn’t for the senior project I probably wouldn’t have thought to do this project, so I’m grateful that I was given this opportunity.
