The Problem

Whereas 30 years ago, 60% of students who lived in a two mile radius of school biked or walked to get there, today these numbers have dwindled to less than 15%. While important to both the environment in reducing single vehicle trip emissions as well as to the health of the individual child, bike and walk programs have become a thing of the past. With this Bike and Walk Bonanza I hope to inspire a behavioral change in students at a young age while giving them the life-saving road skills to prevent tragedy.

Plan of Action

The Bike and Walk Bonanza project is a comprehensive transportation and health review of every school we enter. This week long event includes: bike rodeos taught by League of American Cyclists, BMX stunt/safety assemblies, parent motorist responsibility meetings, and a bike and walk to school day challenge. By gradually increasing the "hands-on" factor and divulging more information day by day, we hope to transform the way in which the community views biking and walking as a viable and safe alternative to getting to school.
