The Problem

5.1 million Americans live in "worst-case" housing situations. These needs stem from problems such as over crowded living conditions and/or physically deficient housing. Additionally, 13 million Americans use over half of their income for housing. Bike & Build's goal is to make a difference in these people's lives by helping others provide safe, low-income housing.

Plan of Action

Each participant begins by fundraising at least $4,000 before the trip begins. We all volunteer at least 8 hours with a Habitat affiliate or other local affordable housing organization, and we spend time researching the history of affordable housing in the United States. This research is then used through out the summer as participants have a weekly meeting where we teach each other about different aspects of the problem. Bike & Build has an amazing impact. Over 6 years we have donated over 30,000 hours of volunteering with affordable housing organizations. We've also given over $1.6 million to local affiliates through out the country. Together, the 550 people who have taken up this challenge have logged more than 2.2 million miles in their cross country adventures. The two months spent on the road are a constant advertisement for bettering our community. Every stop we make along the way is an opportunity to share with someone else how they can be involved in making our community a better place.
