The Problem

Even as the detrimental effects of human activity on the environment have been illuminated, there has often continued to be indifference and even hostility to change at governmental and personal levels. Doubtless, it is future generations that will suffer most from the consequences of inaction and though younger generations certainly hear a lot more about climate change and environmental sustainability than ever before, definitive action has been limited. Birthright Earth is a response to the call for action. We seek not only to continue to educate rising young adults, future decision makers, about environmental sustainability, but we seek to inspire action by sowing powerful seeds of motivation and education through direct exposure and a unique experience. Discourse over climate change and sustainability at times reaches the point where it becomes almost hackneyed and a solution seems out of reach. Instead, we seek to inject energy, hope, and excitement into the efforts of younger generations to be active in combating man-induced degradation of the environment. We believe that awe-inspiring direct experience will be a catalyst for generational change and a stimulant for action.

Plan of Action

The Birthright Earth mission is to create a generational change in environmental consciousness and action. Inspired by, but not affiliated with, Taglit-Birthright Israel, which sends young Jewish adults to Israel to increase their ties to the country, Birthright Earth aims to teach youth about the environment through firsthand experience. We believe in the potential for leadership, innovation, and collaboration that the world’s young generations possess and we believe that such overwhelming energy can be guided towards environmental initiative and activism. Birthright Earth selects applicants for 10-day, fully funded trips through the Amazon rainforest that include hiking, canoeing, field research and lectures by resident biologists. The Birthright Trip is a gift. As our name suggests, we believe it is the birthright of every individual or generation to be able to enjoy and experience the beauties of nature, in their time. A generation that destroys such beauties therefore erodes the birthright not only of itself but also that of future generations. Our trip is an initial, influential step meant to inspire both awe and a sense of urgency. Once Birthright Earth travelers return from their trips, the organization will provide environmental volunteer work and employment opportunities through our affiliates as well as give past travelers the opportunity to work for Birthright Earth. Finally, Birthright Earth will publicize avenues for investment in the environment through conservation, donations, and land purchases. It is these levels of involvement that we believe young and future generations must become engaged in. The best way for young people to make a change and apply their energy is to take the lead in beginning to solve one of the world’s biggest problems: climate change and man induced environmental degradation. We believe the “See it to Save it” approach to be a pioneering way to help develop stronger commitments to environmental action among young generations of our world, leading to more sustainable, environmentally conscious ways of life that are crucial for the continued survival of our planet. We are a young, rapidly growing company in a heavy fundraising stage in order to begin to make our impact this coming summer. We have however, through our numerous events and fundraisers, spread awareness and information about deforestation to thousands of young adults across the nation.
