The Problem

Children who see news stories of melting ice caps and drowning polar bears are worried and afraid about their future. Some are even seeing these impacts first hand. Unable to express their concerns by voting, they feel powerless. Through Blanket the Globe I have found a way for them to be empowered by turning their fears into creative action. It's social action through art. www.blankettheglobe.org

Why It's Important

Adults need to know how children feel about the earth they will soon inherit. It's also important for children to know that their concerns are being heard. Art is a powerful, effective, visual, ageless, and fun medium of communication in so many ways. Anyone seeing the collection of messages cannot be impacted by their force. When it's on display at parks, schools or even at the Boston Public Library, it's a wonder to watch people take in the specific messages on each square. That thoughtful gaze is something I like to call that "the museum stare"; something I like to think has gazers thinking about how they can better global citizens.

The Plan Of Action

Blanket the Globe is an ever-growing montage of connected one-foot fabric squares thoughtfully designed by children 0-18 years old with their messages. Every time I add a child's message I feel more responsibility to make sure that message is heard. With over 2,000 messages now from all over the world, I feel that the potential of this project is in its infancy. I've brought it all over my state with help from the state parks agency and the internet has taken it global. I've had it on display at the Massachusetts State House and was recognized before the fully assembled House of Representatives. I would like to bring it to Washington, the United Nations, or some other gathering of environmental policy-makers to maximize its impact.

How Can Others Get Involved?

Make squares, or if you're not 18 or under, make a square with someone who is. It's a great project for groups, schools, fairs and organizations. Become a Blanket the Globe Ambassador, speak out, and help spread the word!
