Blankets for Evacuees
the problem:
We live in an area that is used for evacuees when a tornado or hurricane is projected to hit Texas' coast. Because alot of families only receive moments to evacuate, they end up in the evacuee centers without alot of necessities. For the past two years the students and teachers have chosen to make fleece blankets/throws to give to them. They have in the past used their own money and donations from our teachers. However, because we are a poor school district we have not been able to provide as many as we would like to make. This grant would allow us to purchase alot more material to make the blankets with.

25why it's important:
Because we have been fortunate not to have had to go through what alot of these families have gone through, we want to let them know that people care about them, even people who don't know them. We want the evacuees and students to know that caring for each other is the first step in healing. Healing people and nations!
the plan of action:
To purchase the fleece with the money. All manpower is donated by the students and teachers. The blankets/throws would then be stored until the next evacuees come to our area churches. The students love making the blankets and learn that a giving heart is a blessed heart.

OMG. Love this.
It sort of reminds me of those old school AIDS quilts. Maybe you could get people from around teh country to help make these blankets and then sew parts together so that its really like people coming together to help?
And don't airlines have lots of fleece blankets that they only use once? Maybe they could donate that fabric to you when they are done.
What great suggestions! However, the blankets we make are not sewn - we use one large piece of fleece and fix decorative knots on the ends. We have in the past had some blankets donated to our school, by an individual, from an airline that went out of business but they were too thin for this purpose.
Oooh. I get it now. Thats cool.
What about a giant "Knot in your Community" day where you get hundreds of people to come in a tie knots, making the blankets together?
That's a really thought provoking suggestion! Will have to wait and see if we are awarded some grant money and are able to buy the material. I definately like that idea though. A great way to bring the community together.
