Bloom Youth Center

the problem:

The community which we plan to serve is Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. The town is small with many youth and a large university. Unfortunately, for youth, there is not much to do in the town which results in some of the youth getting into trouble. Many of the towns outlying communities are impoverished and have very few youth centered facilities. The teen birth rate is very high in Bloomsburg, there is a moderate teen crime rate and many teens end up taking dead end and blue collar jobs even though there is a university within arms reach. The mayor of the town, Dan Knoor, expressed a need and desire to have something... and somewhere for the youth to go and participate in. The mayor has given us his full support and cooperation which we cannot thank him enough for.

why it's important:

The three of us working on founding the youth center have been working with teenagers for several years. We all love teenagers and want to help them to succeed thorough one of the most difficult parts of life.

the plan of action:

Bloom Youth Center will provide a place for the youth of the community to go in order to keep them off the streets and out of trouble. Bloom Youth Center will be a welcoming environment where youth are encouraged to learn and grow as well as serve the community to provide for a better tomorrow. BYC will have an after school homework help center, computer lab, socialization lounge and game room. BYC's staff will mentor local youth, lead community volunteer initiatives and educational activities. BYC believes that every youth should have an opportunity to achieve his or her fullest potential and will help in any way possible to make it happen.

BYC has taken the necessary steps of applying for non profit status, a license to raise funds, and incorporation. As of several weeks ago the origination has achieved full non profit organizational status. We have met with the mayor of the town on several occasions to discuss what the town needs and wants out of a youth center. Our next steps are raising funds, finding a building and publicizing the organization. BYC has already begun searching for funding, applying for grants and looking for a building.
