The Problem
Cedar Rapids, Iowa was severely destroyed in the floods of 2008. 10 square miles of homes, businesses and civic buildings destroyed. Public library and school buildings lost. Families still remain uprooted from their homes living in FEMA trailers. Children are without their belongings.
Plan of Action
First, I sent out letters to local charity organizations to see if they could help my book drive. Then I put together a poster with pictures about the floods and displayed that at our family reading night. I talked about what I was doing and had kids bring book donations to school. We had a contest between classrooms to see who could bring the most books and gave Girl Scout Cookies to the highest classroom. I got a donation of $50 from the Lions Club and used that at our schools book fair. Our local newspaper put an article about this in the paper.
