The deadly earthquake in Sichuan, China (May 2008) affected vast number of people. High school students face great challenges. Even while the school has not yet been restored, these students are expected to cope with not only the aftermath of the earthquake, but also their schoolwork and the extremely competitive college entrance examination. Since English is a required course in high school in China and the students don't have access to English books, we would like to help The No. 1 High School in Dujiangyan, Sichuan build an English book section.
This project is very important to us because it is the expansion (continuation) of our previous projects. It is our goal and passion to help others in need.
In May, 2008, our family formed an organization, ‘We Care Act’, to help the earthquake victims by organizing fund raising activities. My younger sister and brother and I sent our collected cash to the American Red Cross first and then delivered the other donations to the student victims to Sichuan ourselves through a special trip arranged by our parents on August 12, 2008. After meeting with the students and residents and seeing the earthquake remains, we decided to help these and other disaster victims as much as we can.
We will organize about 50-100 volunteers to participate in book drives and fundraising activities to collect English books and raise funds to help this high school.
There are many ways others can help us with our projects:
1. We accept cash donations.
2. We welcome others to participate our book drives and fundraising activities.
3. We can also help others to organize a book drive, bookmark fair, or fundraising activities. In fact, we have designed various bookmarks to be printed and others can print and make the bookmarks and hold a bookmark fair on their own easily. We can also make the bookmarks for those who are interested in selling them to raise funds.

Update: Our book fair, book drives, and fundraising activities have been very successful. We raised total $1231 for Sichuan’s earthquake victims and collected nearly one thousand books! We are still sorting and counting the books, and collecting more books.
Our first set of 210 books is on the way to Dujiangyan Qingcheng Mountain High School, the new name of The No. 1 High School in Dujiangyan, Sichuan!
Thanks to Dr. Yi Li, who carried the two boxes of books when he went to visit Yangzhou, Jiangsu, at the Chinese New Year. Thanks to Dr. Song Gao who shipped the books from Yangzhou to Sichuan!
We continue looking for inexpensive ways to send books to Sichuan (from Houston). Please let us know if you could help.
In addition to help the earthquake victims in Sichuan, China, our team leaders have also been conducting clothing drives and fundraising activities to help Haiti’s earthquake victims. We sent 230 items (baby’s and children’s clothes, toys, shoes, etc.) and $1003 to the Haiti victims this month. We are raising more funds and collecting more items to help these victims. Please visit our site www.wecareact.org for more details.

A year after the earthquake, these people are still grieving over their losses and dealing with the immense difficulty in their lives. Students in high school face great challenges. Even while the school has not yet been restored, these students are expected to cope with not only the aftermath of the earthquake, but also their schoolwork.
In May, 2008, our family formed an organization, ‘We Care Act’, to help the earthquake victims by holding fund raising activities. My younger sister, my little brother, and I sent our collected cash to the American Red Cross first and then delivered the rest of the donations to the student victims to Sichuan ourselves in the summer during our visit to Dujiangyan, Sichuan, on August 12, 2008. We also donated books and bookmarks we made to a makeshift middle school.
In May 2009, a family from our neighborhood visited Dujiangyan, Sichuan, and met with students, principals, and local officials, on behalf of our organization “We Care Act”. We sent additional donations ($1101) to help the 5 students mostly in need in Dujiangyan, Sichuan. This family established a direct communication for us with Dujiangyan First Middle School. We have learned that this school has about 2800 students, all take English as a required course. After the earthquake, the school does not have a library yet, and there are no English books for students or teachers.
Therefore, we would like to do something for the earthquake victims.

You are very inspirational! I would love to do something like that but I am not able to travel to china. I collected clothing for the earthquake victims last summer but was not able to ship them there. Instead I donated the clothing to another charity. Is there anyway I can send supplies to earthquake victims?
This sounds like a great project! If you haven't already, you should apply for a grant! Go to www.dosomething.org/grants
Dear save_wildlife,
Thank you for your kind comments!
Here is what we have done and I hope that will be helpful to you:
We collected money from our family, friends, neighbors, and schools through various activities including generating flyers and newsletters to let them know what we were doing. We also made and sold bookmarks to raise funds. Yes, we were fortunate to be able to visit Sichuan last year and deliver donations to the victims directly. But we also sent donations through the bank this year since we could not visit.
For the upcoming book drives, we plan to raise enough money to ship the books there. I know it’s expensive to send books through the post office but we have not found an inexpensive method yet. Usually, people are generous in helping out when they learn that their donations are for a good cause. If you want to raise funds, you should decide whether you would like to send money and/or send supplies, and that will probably be a factor in what the best method is.
If you would like further information or to discuss details with us over the phone or email, please send us (wecareact1@yahoo.com) your contact information and we will get back to you.
Thanks again and best of luck with your project!
