Books For Beatz

the problem:

As a senior graduating from High School last year, I noticed that some of my fellow students weren't prepared for the material they would have to read for comprehension in college. I also noticed many of these same students shared my love for music. So I decided to create the Books For Beatz program, to incorporate the love of music with the love of reading!

why it's important:

I noticed that many students in my High School had IPODs and cellphones filled with music. Unfortunately too many of these same students are failing or stuggling in school.I created the Books for Beatz program, at the Bronx Leadership Academy in the Bronx NY, for students who had a love for music, to give them a chance to explore their self expression while preparing them for their college experience. Reading is important to our everyday existence. If you cant read a stop sign and keep going you maybe headed for disaster. Well I feel that many of the students who are attending college today are faced with the same dilema. To watch my fellow students drop out because they were ill prepared for college is very disheartening. These students will need their education now more then ever, and I just felt like I had to try to help.

the plan of action:

The students were asked to read 10 college level books (Some titles listed near bottom of paragraph), in return they would record a song in a full time production studio. The program first began with 4 students and now has almost 35 to 45 kids participating. After the kids read the books, submit the reports, and record the songs, they are working on putting together a CD to sell to raise funds for their music program, and to raise literacy awareness. The students have several shows planned as well. The students have been able to outreach the likes of WFAN radio personality Tony Paige, Dip Set rap group member Freaky Zeke, and District #3 Community Chairperson Gloria Alston to gain assistance and support for the program. Here is a list of some of the books the students are reading:
The Color Purple;
When I Was Puerto Rican;
The Jungle;
The Grapes of Wrath;
Treasure Island;
Huck Finn;
The Bluest Eye;
Sula;
Bailey’s Café;
My Sister’s Keeper;

Hey Shaleshea,

Great work. You inspire me to do more. I hope the students realize how much you care. If you build it, they will come; so keep building! Much respect.

Ron

Great way to tackle the problem. Although teachers learn the importance of approaching teaching and learning through varied ways because everyone learns differently, many often don't do it. You've taken on the issue in a very unique way - through music! I am sure you'll find great success. Please do let us know how it goes. Good luck!

As a teacher at Bronx Leadership I have seen how much this program can impact students, expecially the students at our school whose creative outlets are really limited by the lack of resources at our school! Great work!

Hey I think this program is official. I'm going into my senior year in Middletwon High School and I'm going to see if we can do it at my school next year. I like the idea of reading and creating music. I'm definitely excited and hope your book fair is a hit. Hope you get my email. Later!

This program seems promising, somebody needs to take it national and then intenational so it can effectively help todays youth considering how much music is connected to everyone in some way or another.

Good S**t!
