The Problem

In 2009, an estimated 192,370 women in the United States were diagnosed with breast cancer and about 1,910 men were diagnosed. The American Cancer Society spends $130 million a year on cancer research. The American Cancer Society Making Strides events raise funds and awareness to fight breast cancer and provide hope to people facing the disease. In 2009, nearly 700,000 walkers across the country collected more than $60 million to help create a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays (American Cancer Society, 2010). Our support will help American Cancer Society educate the public about reducing the risks and early detection, help people get well with hands-on support and service, and fight back by rallying communities and advocating for cancer policies.

Plan of Action

For the month of October, we started on the Breast Cancer Awareness Project. We participated in the American Cancer Society Striders for Purpose Walk for breast cancer. We will also hosted fundraisers by selling things such as; breast cancer awareness bracelets and ribbon donation cards where patrons donated $1.00 for the cause. There was also be a Ribbon of Hope Bake Sale on the week of October 18 where we sold baked goods for $.50 to $1.00. To show our breast cancer spirit, we wore a pink shirt every Friday and those who participated donated a dollar for wearing pink. All our proceeds went to the American Cancer Society.
