The Problem
Brooklyn Bridge to Cambodia is a 501 (c) (3), grass roots organization that is working to alleviate poverty and food insecurity in rural Cambodia. The majority of Cambodians are employed in the agricultural sector and many suffer from the low level of agricultural productivity. Many lack access to any sort of irrigation system other than a bucket. There is also a heavy focus on rice cultivation in this area; rice not only lacks nutrition but is also not as valuable as fruits and vegetables.
Plan of Action
BB2C was created by our founder Paula Shirk, who lives in Brooklyn and adopted a son from Cambodia. After visiting and learning about the desperation of the rural people she created BB2C and it is now run in Cambodia by myself and 2 other young volunteers from the USA along with our 2 Cambodian staff members. We are supported by a global network of young volunteers who have committed hours to this project.
We were inspired by Kickstart International, an organization in west Africa that has sold over 160,000 of these pumps and pulled more than 500,000 people out of poverty.
Here in Cambodia we spend 4 days a week in the rural villages doing demonstrations of our pumps and work in close collaboration with village leaders. Our plan is to find the right people that our pumps can help and sell in order to insure that we find people who are committed to making an investment for a better future for their families.
Our long term plan is to transition the sale of the pumps to locals in the villages once their is sufficient demand. This will keep more money in the community and create more jobs.
