The Problem

The community is in downtown Brooklyn and consists of mostly low to moderate income families. The Brooklyn Detention Complex is re-opening in 2012 and has stirred a larger conversation about restorative justice. We will create a mural at the Detention Complex that will illustrate the concerns and potential positive affects of restorative justice to the community. The project will bring together two professional artists, 14 apprentice artists between the age of 14 - 21 and a handful of incarcerated youth as well as community members to collaborate in creating this 120 ft mural. While currently only those directly involved in creating the mural are impacted, this mural will serve as an inspiration to 100's of individuals each day once it is complete.

Plan of Action

Over the next 7 weeks, our team will paint a mural on the walls of the Brooklyn Detention Complex. We will start by meeting with the staff of the Brooklyn Detention Complex and come up with designs based on that meeting. Then we will share our designs with the community to get feedback. Once a final design is approved we will paint the mural, inviting community members to help. When the mural is complete we will hold a public dedication to invite the community to celebrate the new mural. As of now the community surrounding the Brooklyn Detention Complex is concerned about the the re-opening of the facility. We hope that the mural will inform the public of the benefits of restorative justice that the Complex has to offer.
