The Problem
I had a friend in high school who was literally saved by her seatbelt in a bad car accident. I wanted to raise awareness of how important seat belt usage is.
Plan of Action
I partnered with my local department of transportation, who supplied me with everything I needed and I posted signs and painted "buckle-up" reminders at the end of every school driveway and parking lot in my school district. (I had to get it approved by the school superintendent and every school principal, first.)I also made flyers to hand out at school, put an add in the newspaper, and put up a notification of my work and another reminder on the school news channel on TV. I set up checkpoints before and after the project at each place I posted signs, to count how many seatbelts were actually being used. After I totaled all my data, I learned that there was a significant increase in seatbelt usage after I posted and painted awareness signs. I think that it is very important to wear seatbelts because they can be the difference in life and death, so I want to help other people make good descisions too.
