The Problem
We are trying to generate $1,200 in order to pay for the performers of Calculus: the Musical! to come and do a show at our school. Bringing this program to our school will provide the AP Calculus students as well as those in Applied Algebra, Pre-Calculus, and the Choir and Band, with a more in-depth knowledge of a system of mathematics they are either currently studying or will be studying within the near future. This production allows students to see a lighter and more entertaining side of not only Calculus, but of math in general. This presentation will present historical and mathematical concepts in a light-hearted and non-threatening environment.
Plan of Action
In order to book Calculus: The Musical! for March 10th, we must have $1200 a month in advance to pay for the performance.
My AP Calc class, our teacher, as well as myself, have been brainstorming fundraising ideas and possible grants in order to raise this amount of money. So far, my teacher and a fellow classmate have applied for a "Kids Count Grant," another student has applied for a local grant, and I have applied for this "Dosomething Seed Grant." For fundraising, we have developed the idea of "flocking" people's yards. This means that we have a set of yard flamingos that we go and place in people's yards. We leave them a note explaining that they have been flocked and that they can either pay $10 to remove it, or $15 to pass it on to someone else. It has been so successful that each student of my class donated $5 to pay for another set of flamingos, so that we can flock double the amount of people.
In order to reach our goal, we continue to research and brainstorm more fundraising ideas.
If, for some reason, we raise more than $1200 between grants, fundraisers, and donations, we plan to start a fund so that we can start a tradition of bringing Calculus: The Muscial! to Gunnison High School annually.
