The Problem

From 2008-2010, the U.S. Department of State recorded the resettlement of 208,000 refugees. Of this number, over 18,000 were adolescent refugee girls. Once resettled, girls face overwhelming responsibilities and social isolation compared with their male counterparts, and receive very limited support.

Plan of Action

Camp GirlForward will be a 10-week summer program designed to empower adolescent refugee girls by: preparing them for the coming school year and for higher education through individualized curriculum and support in ESL, Math/ACT Prep, and Computer Skills; increasing girls’ sense of security and ability to navigate their community through the Safe Pathways Project; building confidence and leadership skills through group activities and workshops. This project will be developed by GirlForward staff in partnership with students at Loyola University Chicago.
