The Problem

Literacy education is currently seen as an in-school initiative. The focus of Camp Ready Child is to provide a fun and educational day for local K-6 grade students as well as educate parents on the NDEA Ready Child initiative. We will hold a one-day camp on February 18, 2012, at the University of Mary. U-Mary SNDEA chapter members will organize events for campers, and the theme will be sponsored around a camp theme. All events will center around our camp theme. For example, one event will be titled “Wilderness Writing” and students will write a letter to someone telling them what they think of camp. In addition, we will invite three speakers for parents to attend on-campus while their children are participating in literacy-based activities. The speakers will discuss the Ready Child initiative and the importance of literacy in the home. Parents will join students for several events, lunch and a snack. The purpose of this camp is to educate both children and parents about the Ready Child Initiative.
