The Problem

We are attempting to give voice to youth in the San Antonio, Texas community by teaching them how to use new digital media to create video projects focusing on problems in their community. The problem we are trying to solve will be decided upon by the youth participating in this program. In the past, the video projects have focused on a variety of issues spanning from immigration reform, health, women's roles and gender identity.

Plan of Action

We are attempting to create a summer program in San Antonio, Texas using a model already developed by the Campecine Youth Academy in Indianapolis, Indiana. The main focus of this program would be to create video projects with the participants that spotlight issues in their community. Participants in this program consist of 15 Latino youth from the South Side San Antonio area between the ages of 12 and 17 who have an interest in digital media technology, community building and social change. A local organization, La Fuerza Unida, has opened their doors to us and is allowing us to meet in their space twice a week from 12pm to 4pm. We are also inviting guest speakers throughout the summer to make presentations regarding the many organizations in the San Antonio area that are working to improve these communities. This summer program will take place between June 14, 2011 and August 4, 2011. The final presentation of the video projects will occur on August 5, 2011.
