The Problem

Many people have been affected by cancer, whether it is themselves who have it or a family member. We want to fight it. Personally, my grandma used to have cancer (lymphoma), and I was lucky enough to still have her after she was treated with chemotherapy. Recently, my uncle in the Philippines passed away from lung cancer. I am sure everyone can relate to situations like these, and that is why we really do care. That is why we choose to Do Something. We want life to be better for everyone and help them get through their tough times by bringing them energy and joy.

Plan of Action

Last year, my friends and I held the Benefit for Johanna, a benefit concert and fashion show. Johanna Orozco, our honoree, was a victim of rape and gun violence. It was a great success for us, and we were able to raise over $3,000 for her. This year we plan to do the same, but for cancer. First, we start by making calls and send letters to local businesses, in hopes that they will sponsor us.Typically, we do not have much luck with that part, but if we do not raise enough money we spend out own. Next, we call clothing shops for clothing donations or borrows. We choose our models carefully, and we are lucky to have many tall friends! We have been scoping out some locations, though it is a difficult task to find a nice and affordable place. We decided that the show will be sometime in mid-July. As for entertainment, we look for artists who are down for the cause. Last year, Pete Nischt played for free, because he was truly touched by Johanna's story and our efforts. We want people who care. Once all is set, I design all the artwork that goes into it (t-shirts, programs, tickets, posters). We also sell t-shirts, pins, raffle tickets, and bakery.
