The Problem

Many Senior Citizens are neglected in nursing homes. Most holidays pass by like an ordinary day with no gifts or people showing that they care.

Plan of Action

Students and teachers within our school bought carnations to donate to the nearby nursing center. Because there were so many citizens, we held a meeting after school to make fake, paper tissue carnations to ensure that everyone would get one. We placed all the real carnations in a vase to put on the front desk. All the carnations made went to the senior citizens and workers. After we went from room to room, we read poetry in the diner, sang songs, and conversed with the senior citizens. This made an impact on the owner of the nursing home because she was amazed that so many young students donated time and money to bring joy to elderly people. Many citizens were happy to receive carnations and hear the words "Happy Valentine's Day." It also impacted all the volunteers because we had a chance to see what happens on what we consider holidays. It also made us aware that a nursing home can make someone emotional seeing the pain and loneliness elderly people experience.
