The Problem

Why focus on one cause when you can help them all? Three years ago, a friend and I created “Causes Film Festival.” An entertaining night complete with exciting and powerfully moving 90 second videos made by people within the community. It’s a night full of educating one another and an opportunity to turn learning into action to support the growth of a better world. Any cause, whether it is local, national or global, ranging from human rights to environmentalism, homelessness, war, diseases, animal rights to social justice, and so many more are included and represented. The film festival raises awareness about issues, and that education is the first step towards change. Combining critical thinking with creativity and passion can fuel unbelievable results. The film festival focuses on any and every cause that is striving to better our society and world.

Plan of Action

Causes Film Festival was created three years ago and was held in Valdosta, Georgia. The idea was first born out of an anthropology class focused on socio-cultural change. My professor and I decided to make our idea a reality and six months later, we held our first film festival on the campus of Valdosta State University. Thirty videos were shown to an audience of 200 people. After uploading the videos to facebook and you tube, people from across the nation were contacting us and commenting on the videos. One video was even watched 20,000 times within the next six months. Over the following two years, the project grew, into an enormous amount of video submissions, and an ever-expanding audience. Things were getting done, events were being held, discussions were being had, whether in classes or among friends, over dinner, out at bars, and all because of someone watching a 90 second film. Due to the success of the project in Valdosta, we realized that we should take this project across the map. We want to host this film festival at every college campus, and all other communities that are willing to have us. Our next step is to branch out and begin hosting Causes Film Festival in other areas. Eventually, we hope to make the project into a non-profit organization so we can grow in financial backing and resources, and continue to make a difference.
