The Problem
Challah for Hunger chapters bake and sell challah bread to raise money and awareness for hunger and disaster relief. Through the process, volunteers gain community, kitchen experience, leadership skills and the inspiration to make a difference.
Plan of Action
The first chapter of Challah for Hunger started in November 2004 at Scripps College in Claremont, California. CfH has grown very quickly, mostly be word of mouth. Today, we have almost 30 chapters mostly based on college campuses in the US. (For a full list of chapters, please visit our website www.challahforhunger.org.)
One of our goals is to provide serious leadership experiences and development opportunities. In order to support all of the people who want to do CfH, and in order to provide excellent leadership opportunities, we are building a National Support Team.
Each chapter will have a Chapter Advisor, an experienced volunteer/alum who is trained to support new chapters. In addition, we are also starting support committees, such as our Education and Advocacy Committee that will provide guidance to the chapters in these areas. (Each chapter chooses what organizations/causes to support with 50% of its profits, and donates the other 50% to our national cause, which is currently Darfur, through the American Jewish World Service. The chapters are encouraged to use their sales tables as a place to educate customers about Darfur and other issues, and are also encourage do host special educational events.)
With the National Support Team, we will be able to add many new chapters quickly.
