The Problem

We are launching a girl empowerment club for disadvantaged girls in our community. As a volunteer with a group called Latinitas, I've had the pleasure of mentoring a group of middle school girls. This group takes place in the bordertown of El Paso, Texas in the poorest section of town. Many of the girls are recent immigrants and learning English. The schools in this area have high rates of gang activity, high school drop out and a high teen pregnancy rate. We want to help empower younger girls to build confidence and achieve their goals.

Plan of Action

We are partnering with Latinitas, a group dedicated to empoweirng Latina youth. As a volunteer with that group, they are helping by reserving a location for the camp and providing us with planning support, proper paperwork, supplies and equipment for the program. Our planning process includes: -reserving space at a local recreation center -creating an outline for the camp activities -designing promotional materials -distributing posters & registration forms -recruiting volunteers -gathering a list of needed supplies -recruiting participants -organizing field trips -requesting donations
