See It
The problem I want to address is the lack of education for the youth in my town. Currently there is an anti-drug program in the middle and high school, but I believe that there is not enough emphasis put on the use of tobacco. Since it is the “gateway” drug. To address this problem a fun interactive environment will be created where they will be learn the effects and dangers of smoking.
Believe It
My project will address the problem of smoking by reaching out to adolescents who normally do not receive this information. This program will give children a chance to think twice about the effects of smoking, so that when the time comes they can be comfortable with saying no.
Build It
My Project will be educating the youth in my town about the dangers of smoking. I will be running a series of workshops for the kids in my town to attend.
The first step will be to acquire the resources to teach the class. I will do this by going to my Girl Scout council to get any supplies they have; I will then branch out my search by going to the American Heart, Lung and cancer associations.
After I have gotten all of the necessary information I will begin to train a select group of friends and family so on the day of the workshop they will be able to run one of the stations. The stations include, who smoking effects, how tobacco companies target people, the main reason why people smoke, how to say no, the chemicals of cigarettes and the harmful effects of nicotine.
After the volunteers are trained the township will be contacted to coordinate and ask permission to use a facility and a date that would be available to run the workshop. At this time I will be prepared to actually run the workshop. After the event I will review the evolutions and make the necessary improvements for future events.
The entire community will benefit but especially the youth that attend the program, the parents who sent their kids to the program and the environment.
The attendees of the program will leave feeling reassured that they can say no to peer pressure of smoking. If they chose to be smoke free they will also be healthier and happier. The parents of the attendees will benefit because the workshop will alleviate the pressures to talk about smoking leaving communication open that will make the relationship in the future happier. The community will also benefit from this project from this project. There will be less trash around since less people are smoking there will be fewer cigarette butts lying around, making the ground and surrounding area look nicer. The community will also benefit from it because the air will be cleaning making our town a nicer place to live.
