The Problem

Johnson City, Tennessee is the home of the third largest V.A. Hospital in the United States. Veterans come from all over the nation to recieve care, and when they get here, life happens. They move to this area because of their medical needs and some are unable to work or find jobs and have no place to live. Some veterans end up sleeping in abandoned buildings, temporary shelters, vehicles, and on the streets because they cannot afford to live anywhere else. It is more than difficult for our homeless veterans to find a place to live when they do not have a job. Most of them do not have higher education, job skills, a mailing address, or proper hygiene required to be hired for most jobs.

Plan of Action

Citizens Soldiers, Inc has a plan to buy a warehouse in Johnson City, Tennessee and renovate it as a transitional halfway house. Citizens Soldiers transitional house will be a 24-month program where the homeless veterans and their families can live while they learn job skills, get an education, and are helped with finding work to get back on their feet. They are taught how to live independently as they learn these skills and work with crisis intervention counseling. In crisis intervention counseling they begin to heal from addictions, mental disorders, and other traumas. The future goals of Citizens Soldiers is to renovate houses in the Johnson City area for permanent housing for the veterans who have completed the program. Also, Citizens Soldiers is growing nationally. 35 people across the nation are helping us get started in our region. The plan is to grow throughout our region and build transitional homes in the Tri-Cities area of Kingsport and Bristol and then throughout the nation to help our homeless veterans and their families.
