City Year corps member

the problem:

The problems that city year are targeting are numerous. We are looking to give children a better chance at life by spending almost 10hrs a day mentoring and tutoring them. By doing this we also hope to improve their grades and give them back that confidence and a positive can do attitude. We also target the high rise in the HIV by going around the youth (high school) and giving them the knowledge and the tools they need to keep themselves safe. We give them facts, clinics to get free testing, and hand out kits with condoms and facts. Last but not least we target the community as a whole by going to different areas and picking up trash, we help create gardens, paint murals, and volunteer at libraries. We do many things and plan to help make a change in all these areas.

why it's important:

This program is important to me because it is a step towards major change. Every day that I walk into these schools and see the bright smile on the faces of the kids my heart is warmed. For many of these kids their city year corps member is the only steady person they have in their lives. It is important that our kids have someone to turn to and that is willing to take that extra time to put into them. Things many people ask is why do you serve, what’s the point of giving up a year of your life, and why would you be willing to work for 200 dollars a week? My responses to those question are simple. I serve to insure the future of this country and the children that will make this future a better place. I serve for a year of my life to give my energy, education, and time to others who may not have the luxury of being as fortunate as I have been in life. And that the feeling of knowing that if only one child or adult hears my message out of one hundred I can be proud that, that child or adult will take that message and relay it to someone else and so on and so forth. That to me is worth more than any amount of zeros on a pay check. This is a life experience that I will be able to cherish and for the rest of my life, and that will change the lives of so many that will be able to feel the love that I want to share with them. It is important to me to serve and City Year is the foundation that allows me to do so.

the plan of action:

There were many steps to get city year up and running. What started as 20 determined people years ago has turned into 1,000 of corps members located in 18 locations in the U.S.A and 1 in Africa. Our plans is to spread city year to many more locations in and out of the U.S.A. So far the impact that has been made is great more and more people join each year and there is actually a city year being started in Milwaukee. We also have a young heroes team and more and more kids are joining and eventually at the age of 17 they are becoming fully fledged City Year members. We hope that city Year will be a place where many more young people will invest their time in and help to change the world one year at a time!
