The Problem

The city of Philadelphia's schools are in dire need for help with their students. These students have many different but very urgent problems in their lives. Some are coming from broken homes while others are either learning English or have just learned it recently. There are also many issues in the community and environment that contribute to the problems in the schools.

Plan of Action

City Year was started in Boston in 1988 by Michael Brown and Alan Khazei, friends who felt strongly that young people in service could be a powerful resource for addressing our nation's most pressing issues. City Year Greater Philadelphia was founded in 1997 by various members of city council. Personaly, I tutor and mentor students at Francis Hopkinson K-8 in two 4th grade classes, a 6th grade class, and a 7th grade class. I know I am making a differance because when I first showed up to the school one 4th grade student, Damir, only came to school once or twice a week. One day that he showed up I took him aside to do one on one tutoring with him to help his reading level. Since the day I started working with him he has not missed a single day of school and his reading level has increased greatly.
