The Problem
CityExplorers was created to help combat the effects of the summer achievement gap among at-risk youth in the Tenderloin District of San Francisco, a neighborhood with one of the highest poverty levels in the city. Students coming from a low socio-economic background have far fewer opportunities to have educational, meaningful experiences during the summer, and therefore, tend to fall behind their wealthier classmates come Fall, academically. CityExplorers creates safe and meaningful summer learning experiences to build communities and promote academic achievement during the school year for at-risk youth in the Tenderloin District of San Francisco at no cost to the participants.
Plan of Action
CityExplorers began with our core team (professional Educators and other staff) creating and writing our mission statement and our project proposal. We are currently in the process of applying for funding from various sources in the San Francisco Bay Area and elsewhere. Our staff is working on establishing various community partnerships in order to increase the effectiveness of our program and to generate increased support from the community itself, i.e., the Tenderloin District in San Francisco. Beginning in March 2012, our summer staff selection will begin. We expect to have our curriculum (written by various Elementary Education professionals and experiential educational professionals) finalized by late April. Participants will be selected in May and the program itself will run from June 25- July 13, 2012. The potential impact of this program is extraordinary. Not only will students improve academically over the summer, but also they will find a newly-created, supportive community of educators and peers. It is our hope that the participants will continue to make academic strides and become involved with some of our community partnerships throughout the school year.
