Clean and Green Project Initiative

the problem:

In our micro community, Eziukwu Aba, Abia State, Nigeria, we are experiencing severe environmental degradation which had made human habitation quite inhabitable.

The greater percent of this community's population lives in slums, where environmental problems are too easily ignored--where sewerage systems break down; where water purification is inadequate; where vermin infest garbage--filled lots and invade dwellings; where flood renders people homeless as a result of poor drainage system; where little children eat lead paint from the walls in deteriorating apartment buildings...where no one seems to care.

It is with this consciousness that the Vision Bearers are passionate about the environment and the conservation of human habitations. Thus, we have taken it upon ourselves to clean-up and fix up our local environmnt.

why it's important:

My organization's project aims at raising standards against environmental degradation and climate change. Its cardinal purpose is to ensure environmental sustainability. It achieves this via practical sanitation and environmental exercises and environment education of the general public, with greater focus on young people. We believe that young people could become earth stewards if they are taught the proper environmental habits early enough in life. This initiative in its entirety is aimed at improving the sorry state of our local environment.

the plan of action:

Our project activities are run in phases. The first phase borders on sanitation and green programmes such as street clean-up campaign, street clean-up exercises and tree-planting.

While the second phase encompasses the sensitization and education series. This phase is aimed at: (a) enabling young people to reach their full potentials by teaching them how to stay safe and clean early enough in life. (b) Mobilizing young people and synergizing their efforts towards a clean and green environment. (c) Mobilizing market women and educating them on need for environmental sanitation. (d)Training of volunteers at school and community level. (e)Teachinng young people about climate change and the concrete steps they can take to make our planet cleaner and greener.

how you can get involved:

Others can help by volunteering and learning how to make less polluting choices–like:
Walking, biking, carpooling, and using mass transit, as well as limiting travel by using communication technologies. Secondly, planting of deciduous trees to shade houses, since trees can remove fifty pounds of carbon from the air each year. Thirdly, replacing incandescent lights with energy efficient fluorescent bulbs or light fixtures. Fourthly, purchasing energy efficient appliances that display the Energy Star Label. Fifthly, turning off lights, televisions and other electronic devices when not in use. Sixthly, purchasing a fuel-efficient car or alternative fuel vehicle, like fuel cell vehicle; and persuade them to model these practices by committing to a life of voluntary simplicity and earth stewardship.

With the right support and encouragement, young people can accomplish extraordinary things.
