The Problem

The Collaborative aim's to solve substance abuse, ranging from tobacco to alcohol to prescription drugs. A large amount of effort is directed toward youth activities to inspire positive alternatives, as well as youth education about healthy lifestyle choices.

Plan of Action

My work in The Collaborative is with the youth programs such as Vermont Kids Against Tobacco (a middle school group that meets weekly), Students Against Destructive Decisions (a high school group that meets weekly), Refuse To Use (a 6 month long pledge students take to abstain from substances and in return they receive passes to ice skate, ski, or snowboard), Teen Nights (Saturday night activities for teens), Community Garden (for all youth and our Mentor matches to participate in) and numerous other events, fairs, and festivals. While the work I have been doing and The Collaborative's work will continue, we are working on how to create access to all of our programs for youth. Many parents are busy, or families live out of town, and we do not want these reasons to stop kids from having access to all that is offered in their community. A van or bus is the next step in extending access to youth in our community as well as from surrounding areas who couldn't attend otherwise.
