The Problem

Service dogs allow individuals with disabilities to live independently and results in a better quality of life. With the aide of their dogs they can manipulate their environments both at home, within the community, and at school with greater ease and confidence. Having a service dog will allow them to attend school or to interact in their communities knowing they have their best friend by their side ready to help them with all the new challenges and will help them meet new people, gain acceptance within their school, community, and beyond. College Bound Canines recognizes the needs of a physically handicapped high school student heading off to college and will train dogs to help students who may benefit from the services of a trained service animal manipulate their surroundings.

Plan of Action

I developed a powerpoint presentation and presented it to the school board. Titan demonstrated the skills the dogs will learn such as opening and closing the cabinet doors, bring dropped objects and objects from the cabinet, turning on and off light switches, carrying items etc. After receiving the school boards approval, I gave two assemblies to the student body. Applications to become a handler were available then. I developed the application and applied for a business bank account and to become a non-profit organization with the State of Maine. I contacted an insurance agent and got liability insurance for College Bound Canines. I then arranged a parent meeting and discussed the level of responsibility needed by both parents and students to make this work. After that, my family and I began looking for suitable dogs. We search animal shelters and rescue groups only to receive one dog from them as some would not adopt their dogs to our program. We then began looking for puppies for the program. We went from southwestern New Hampshire to nothern Maine to obtain dogs with the correct play drive and temperments. I planned a "passing of the leash" ceremony to give the selected students their dogs. Currently we are beginning the process of training the puppies.
