The Problem

We are addressing the issue of African American males in post-secondary institutions. Recent studies show that only about 36% of American colleges and universities are comprised of African-American males, while African-American females make up about 68%. We work with African-American male seniors at a local high school, equipping them with the motivation and resources they need to graduate and gain admission into a 2 or 4-year college or university.

Plan of Action

Twice a month, our group goes to the local high school to host workshops for our senior students. These workshops address a range of college issues, including financial aid, standardized testing, applications, and involvement on college campuses. Along with this, each senior is matched up with a mentor for one-on-one interaction throughout his senior year. Our mentors address their personal and academic needs. We are there to keep the young men on track as they finish their senior year and apply to a post-secondary institution, and also just to be a friend and have fun with them. In the seven years since it's beginning, Collegiate Candidates has helped over 200 African-American males in the community find their way into a college or university. We have received great support from parents, faculty, and community businesses. We are excited to see our program grow this year.
