The Problem

Problems often take one of two forms. They are either long term, reoccurring throughout history, or short-term, an issue with a foreseeable ending to the crisis. With my project, I seek to present relief to two issues, each of which take a separate form. The first, lack of communication, is the long-term focus. The public school system places youth in a situation where they must acquire some communication skills in order to effectively survive. However, in the home-school culture, teens are not forced to become efficient communicators with various types of people. Therefore I have undertaken the task of coaching and teaching speech and debate theory. The students compete in the National Christian Forensics and Communication Association, which holds competitions across the country. As a group we also strive to assist a short-term issue: The recent disaster in Haiti. We have partnered with AGAPE Flights in order to provide supplies necessary for the relief effort. Combine these two, and we strive to provide solutions for the long-term and short-term issues present in our culture.

Plan of Action

We were able to promote our club through social networking tools, word of mouth, and cooperation with the local home-school group. We meet every Tuesday for approximately 9 months out of the year in order to practice, study, and learn communicative skills. Although I am headed off to college in the fall, and thus will no longer be able to efficiently work with this particular club, I plan to exert the same effort in the community where I study. Thus the horizons for my project are continually broadening.
