Community Emergency Response Cache

the problem:

Most neighborhoods are not adequately prepared to respond to eventual natural disasters (earthquake, etc). My project would develop an emergency response site that would provide my neighborhood with a cache of a emergency supplies for disaster situations. The cache would include medical / sanitary supplies, communication equipment and search & rescue tools.

vital stats:

people impacted:

250

people involved:

25

why it's important:

This project is important to me because it will help prepare my local neighborhood for eventual natural disasters and also provide a inspirational example for my local community of emergency preparedness that hopefully would be replicate in other local neighborhoods.

the plan of action:

My plan is to work with the local neighborhood association to prepare a site to hold a purchased storage container for the emergency supplies. My Boy Scout troop would assist in preparation of the container (shelving, partitions, etc) and also participate in other fund raising activities. The final step would be to acquire emergency supplies, through donation an/or purchase, to outfit the cache for disaster situations. After completion, the cache will provide my local neighborhood with the necessary supplies and equipment necessary to cope with a disaster scenario and potentially save lives.

how you can get involved:

Preparation of cache site, container preparation, donation canvasing and fund raising.

Hey Guys -

Here is an update to my emergency preparedness project for my local neighborhood. Thanks to the DoSomething.org grant, I have purchased all the first aid and emergency communications equipment that I had
outlined for my project. In fact, I was able to find some great deals on the internet and I was able to get
more and/or better equipment than I originally had planned.

The attached picture shows me with all the equipment that I was able to purchase. This included enough
equipment for three outfitted Search & Rescue kits that include a large first kit, long range FRS radio sets, a
bullhorn, leather glove sets, a gas turn-off wrench, and a backpack to hold all these items. In addition, I
purchased a mobile HAM radio transceiver that will support emergency communications with local authorities at the central command location.

In the coming months of the project, I intend to continue work with my neighbors, Boy Scouts and other
volunteers on my project to set up a cache of emergency supplies cache. Eventually, these supplies will be
turned over to my local neighborhood association and Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) representatives to help support them in the event of a natural disaster. In addition, I intend to take an emergency communications class that will allow me to obtain a HAM radio operators license so that I can be better prepared to support my community when required.

Thanks again to DoSomething.org for their generous grant-
