The Problem
Members of the Ionia Kids Club volunteered to plant vegetables at a local Community Garden. This garden is maintained completely by volunteers with assistance from the Ionia County Community Food Network. All the produce will be donated to local food pantries and soup kitchens.
Why It's Important
There are many volunteers who will assist with this project later in the summer. Garden coordinators needed some volunteers that were able to get the vegetables planted before it was too late. As a group we were able to find enough volunteers to get the job done.
The Plan Of Action
We spent 3 hours one Saturday morning planting onions, potatoes, tomatoes, and cabbage. Other vegetables were planted using a planting machine.
How Can Others Get Involved?
The garden will need additional volunteers to pick the ripe produce, package it, and deliver it to local food pantries and soup kitchens. If you are interested in volunteering, contact ENRICH of Ionia County at enrichionia@gmail.com

10/14/09
Update: Our project to help get one Community Garden planted turned into a bigger project with 7 Community Gardens being planted in Ionia County. The Ionia County Community Food Network was established to help coordinate garden efforts and distribution organizations. Total from the gardens so far as been over 25,000 lbs of fresh produce distributed through local food pantries!
The Ionia County Community Food Network is a workgroup made up from representatives from the MSU Extension Office, the United Way & Volunteer Connections, our local Health Dept. along with Community Garden Coordinators and Food Pantry volunteers.
Ionia Kids Club members will help this group by working in local gardens and assisting with marketing and recruiting new volunteers.Additional hours volunteered: 245
