Como Ella works with 10 women in The Workshop of Hope. Here, our social worker and manager oversee the work the women do daily and lead them in education. Como Ella focuses on three key areas with the women we work with.
We first provide our women with steady income that is equal to the work they are doing. These women, before they started working with Como Ella did not have steady incomes, and many were not making minimum wage. Because of this, they were trapped in a cycle of poverty that they could not break out of.
We then provide our women with an education in many areas. One of our main focuses is financial literacy. Because of the manner in which many families in Pachacutec are forced to live, without knowing where the money for their food, clothing and bills will come from, these women have never learned about basic financial skills that are common knowledge to those of us who have regular jobs making enough money to live on. Our financial education focuses on five subjects, has been used all over the world in communities similar to Pachacutec, and is proven to produce great outcomes! The women learn about budgeting, savings, debt management, bank services, and financial negotiations. By helping our women become financially literate, we do more than just give them a steady income, we teach them how to invest and prepare for their future. This gives their family more stability and opportunities than they have ever had before. We also educate the women in other areas, depending on each woman’s needs. Our onsite manager and social worker is in charger of making sure each woman’s needs is being met.
Lastly, we provide our women with an environment in which she may develop a deep and meaningful relationship with God. The Proverbs 31 woman is a key part to what our team strives to be everyday and what we want our women to strive for. This woman is God fearing and shows Christ to those around her. She is strong and has faith in the plan God has for her. To help deepen our women’s relationship with Christ, we have weekly bible study and openly offer the Catholic sacraments. While Como Ella is a Catholic organization, teaching only that of the Catholic church, we also believe in the literal meaning of “catholic.” Catholic means universal, and because of this, we accept each of our brothers and sisters in Christ no matter what their religion. We believe that only in accepting can we show the full love of Christ to our neighbors.
