Ferasha Films: Threads of Hope

the problem:
There are 1.3 billion people in the world that live in extreme poverty and 70% are women. In India alone 456 million Indians live below the international poverty line. In Kolkata, India, there is a fair trade business called ConneXions, which is a vocational training center for underclass women. Women create meaningful work and are compensated through fair trade. This work primarily focuses on the textile industry because this is what these women can do. ConneXions then exports these textiles to various western nations and sell them under a free-trade label, and the impact of this free trade can be seen in the lives of these women. The primary work here is stitching together used saris, the traditional womens garment. They sew together these elaborate pieces and create various types of items to sell from baby slings, skirts, shoulder bags, blankets, etc.
On October 8, 2010, I will release my documentary, "Threads of Hope," about this wonderful organization in order to raise awareness about women in poverty. At the event I will promote fair trade and teach people about extreme poverty. You can learn more about it at www.ferashafilms.com and if you want to learn more about ConneXions you can visit www.connexions.org.in

2why it's important:
It’s important for me because I want to help make a difference in people’s lives. I want people to know that they’re loved and that people out there care. We can make a difference in global development by starting somewhere small than we can expand our horizons until the corners of the earth are finally met.
the plan of action:
This summer I hope to raise awareness that most of India’s poverty level is women. I want people to be encouraged by the stories of women at ConneXions by watching the documentary, "Threads of Hope," in Bethlehem, PA, on October 8, 2010, and empower women through fair trade. I plan to get people involved by encouraging them to participate in the campaign, create videos, and promote fair trade.
how you can get involved:
Others can help by donating to ConneXions, hosting a private house screening of the documentary, buying fair trade, and by raising awareness.
