The Problem
Our community is made up of small New England towns nestled in Southwestern New Hampshire. For generations, people have simply dumped any old items into landfills or before landfills, down the hill in back of their houses. The items dumped release harmful toxins when broken down overtime. This seeps into our well water and the ground eventually contaminating the things we eat and air we breathe.
How do we communicate to an entire community the need for total recycling of old electronic equipment and the dangers of simply dumping these items into our local landfills? At the same time, how can we help the local agencies of the United Way during these difficult economic times?
Plan of Action
1st - I met with the President of EWaste Recycling Inc and the Monadnock United Way sponsor to discuss what was all needed to make this a successful event.
2nd - I promoted the event by creating posters and putting them on community bulletin boards, stores, and restaurants in the region. The stores even put our flyers into every customers bags!!
3rd - I used Facebook to announce the event to my teammates and classmates at school in order to organize the 20 volunteers needed for the day. The volunteers helped with heavy lifting so we tried to use Seniors and Juniors who were on athletic teams or environmental science students at ConVal High School.
4th - I was featured as Volunteer of the Month in our local newspaper for the Monadnock Region (Oct 2010) and we used this article to also announce the event dates and times to the entire region. The circulation was about 20,000
5th - I emailed the local Rotary, Lions & Chamber of Commerce clubs to help spread the word by contacting all their members electronically about the event.
