Serving to love, loving to serve. Each year, over 200 youth and adults participate in our volunteer program, and have their lives changed forever. These individuals are looking for ways to share love within their community, and it is our goal at Civitan to send them away with a life-changing experience that they will, in turn, love. While we need and are sincerely grateful for their help, it is our intention to help them gain more than they could ever give to our program.
This is accomplished through their daily interaction and integration. Additionally, the efforts of our volunteers enable our paid staff to devote the entirety of their attention towards our clients needs. Ultimately, the supportive roles our volunteers play enhance program operations, and it is only through their eager and willing help that we are fully able to enrich the lives of those who attend our programs.
Volunteers are particularly needed throughout the summer months at Camp Civitan. At camp, volunteers are asked to interact with and befriend our clients (eating with them at lunch, assisting them during activities, holding everyday conversations, etc.); take on leadership roles and set an example for our clients; provide entertainment (put on puppet shows, tell jokes, sing karaoke, perform skits); complete light custodial work (washing dishes, cleaning off tables, tearing down and setting up for activities, and filling water jugs); work in the camp canteen and serve meals. The amount of work which our volunteers perform each week is great, and we are very proud of those involved with our program. Our volunteers foster enthusiasm, encourage participation, increase the efficiency of camp operations, and add to our clients’ overall experience. In addition, they become some of our clients best friends, gain a greater understanding about individuals with disabilities, and develop a firm foundation to one day work in a greater capacity with children and adults with disabilities.
